BEST BUYS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM: Your LITTLE BLACK BOOK in Picardy

If you already know France, and Picardy in particular, you'll appreciate that shopping here isn't just a pleasure, it's more a way of life. But when your time is limited, a little help in finding exactly what you want can come in very handy.
So whether it's gastronomic treats you're after, the drinks cabinet needs restocking, there are presents to buy, or you simply want to take some of that inimitable style Picard home with you, why not keep this little guide (download it in pdf, which is a more easily printable version) in the glove compartment as a starting point. The sheer range and quality of goodies available, and at such very reasonable prices, should certainly make shopping one of the highlights of your Picardy break.
Our information is supplied by shoppers and the various Tourist Boards of Picardy, and doesn't claim to be complete, so if you happen to come across any interesting little places even we don't know about, and don't mind letting us in on the secret, do please let us know so that they can be included next year. We've done our best with opening times, but if you're after something really special at one of the smaller family-run outlets, it might be best to ring ahead and check to avoid possible disappointment.
(Note: you'll find listed at the end of this list the dates of the French Bank Holidays).

So what does Picardy have in store for you? To start with, for 'store', read a whole range of outlets, from town-centre specialist shops offering every possible kind of local delicacy, to farm shops in the middle of nowhere; from smart little boutiques and gift shops tucked down side streets, to factory outlets and hypermarkets out on the by-pass. And if you'd like to arrange your shopping trips to coincide with a local street market, we've included a list of market days for the main towns, along with dates for those wonderfully atmospheric Christmas markets that are such a great source of inspiration for presents of all kinds.

If you'd like a reminder of what Picardy does best, here are some old favourites, and some that might be new to you:

Tempted? You will be, so here's where to find them, and lots more besides. We have compiled here a guide to some of the most interesting and individual shopping ideas in Picardy. A word of warning - things like opening times have a habit of changing and it is a little while since we called each establishment. So do call first to check, if you can, just in case! And let us have your comments and your own star discoveries.

You can DOWNLOAD THIS GUIDE IN PDF format, which is version easier to take around...

Champagne

Not many people realise that the appellation d'origine contrôlée vineyard of champagne actually stretches into Picardy - these are the vineyards of the beautiful Marne valley close to Château-Thierry. There are dozens of small producers here. Although most of the production is actually bought up by the major Champagne Houses, many of the growers now also reserve some of their production for sale under their own name. For anyone who knows their champagne, there can be great pleasure in discovering the style that suits their taste and/or a particular occasion. Explore the area on either side of the Marne from Charly-sur-Marne to Dormans, and make your own discoveries - with the added pleasure of paying ex-cellar prices, which are very reasonable indeed. Let us know about your discoveries, if you don't mind sharing your secrets with others! Here is what one "Picardy Pauser", who has been buying his champagne directly from growers here, has had to say about his discoveries…

"A personal view of five champagne houses in Picardy…

Déhu
A small estate, down a winding track with a warm welcome from the Déhu family. Mr Déhu is a real charmer. They have a large tasting room and a small museum with all the traditional implements for making champagne on show. Déhu has won lots of prizes for his champagne over the years. He produces a range of types, including an extra brut (extra dry) for the British market but his brut reserve at about 70ff a bottle is outstanding value, I think, for a well made, well-balanced champagne. His top champagne, Léon Lhermitte, is up with the best of the grandes marques. I probably buy more here than anywhere else.

Figuet
I stumbled upon this one by chance one Sunday when many other growers were shut and have been coming back ever since. You come here for the quality of the wine, not to find out how champagne is made. Bernard Figuet's tasting room is his office and there is no romance about the unprepossessing premises, a modern bungalow on the main road in the village of Saulchery.

However, if it is the champagne you are concentrating on, this is a good place to go. In fact, many of my friends find his? vintage the best champagne of all at the price. He seems to produce a more consistently excellent vintage champagne than most of the other small growers I have found. It has a rich full flavour, which appeals to my palate and I try always to include some of his bottles when I am on a buying trip.

You come here for the wine and the man, not the surroundings!

Baron Albert
Like many of the better small champagne houses in the Marne valley, Baron Albert offers outstanding value, with a good range of vintage and non-vintage champagnes. Small tasting room, small cellars that you can visit and a warm welcome. Both his vintage champagnes are usually excellent.

Pannier
This seems to be the largest and the most professional at welcoming tourists. Guided tours of the cellars, with clear explanations of how champagne is made, with tastings and opportunities to buy at ex-cellar prices. This a much more widely-sold champagne than the others - I believe Eurostar serve it - and recently it has started to win some very impressive medals. My favourite for the all-round experience - the buying, the viewing of cellars and the wine.

Alain Mercier
No relation, I think, to the famous Mercier, this is an altogether lighter, more delicate taste. As a result, it appeals very strongly to some of my friends but it is not for those who, like me, prefer a bigger, more up-front taste. Try for yourself, I suggest.

Happy tasting and buying."

P. Jones
