CHAMBRES D'HÔTES (French-style B&B)
A Chambre d'Hôtes is more or less the equivalent of a British B&B, but the style is - well, more French. Being welcomed into these charming homes as part of the family provides a really authentic experience of French life and a wonderful opportuity to show off your language skills. A Table d'Hôtes is a set meal eaten mainly with the family, based on local produce and family recipes. These meals must be booked in advance.
Chambres d'Hôtes vary in terms of number of rooms to let (up to six), and the standard of comfort, rated by 'ears of corn' ( ) largely because these places are usually in rural surroundings although some are in villages - from 1 (the most modest) through to 4 'ears of corn' (the best of the bunch). They come under the direction of the long established Gîtes de France organisation.

MAISONS D'HÔTES
These are a 'new' and growing type of accommodation, only recently come to Picardy. These are privately owned properties seeking to combine the comfort, relaxation and informality of a private home, with the service and attention to detail of a luxury hotel.
There are two such properties in La Somme in northern Picardy, within an hour's drive of Calais. Both are stunning. Below is a brief description of each.
1. LE MACASSAR
8 place de la République
80800 Corbie
Tel: 00 33 3 22 48 40 04
Email: info@lemacassar.com
Named after the type of ebony used for the art deco panelling of this imposing property’s large drawing room, Le Macassar sits on the main square of Corbie, just 15 minutes from the centre of Amiens and boasts original art deco and art nouveau interiors. The current owners and your hosts during your stay, Ian and Miguel, have had a keen interest in this decorative period for many years and in this house have found a sympathetic setting for their collection of art and furniture.Nevertheless, Le Macassar is not a museum and we aim to strike a balance between comfort and devotion to style.Guests are encouraged to enjoy all the public rooms as well as the large, formal courtyard garden.
There are four distinct "lounge" areas on the ground floor; the Majorelle room attributed to the famous turn of the century cabinet maker Louis Majorelle; the Moroccan salon resplendent in elaborate tiles and moulded ceiling; the ‘Gallery’ with its deco macassar panelling and grand piano as well as the dining room where breakfast is served (at a time to suit you, not us!). |
 |
At the top of the house, guests can enjoy the original art deco library, now also home to a magnificent French billiard table. Guest rooms are large and comfortably furnished with a mix of antique and modern furniture large, high quality beds, feather pillows and duvets, decadent en-suite bathrooms (several with whirlpool baths), fireplaces, CD players and tea/coffee making facilities.
