The Somme battlefields | The Chemin des dames | The Armistice Clearing

The Battle of the Somme in 1916 lasted from 1 July to 17 November. At the end of the first day, 60 000 British and Commonwealth troops were wounded dying or dead. By the time the battle ended, British casualties exceeded 400,000.

This is undoubtedly the most renowned of all the battles which took place in this area, but the Somme first became a battle ground in 1813. Reading about this carnage in history books will tell you the facts, but nothing can compare with visiting the sites themselves.

The entire region of Picardy is dotted with battlefields and memorials to the brave soldiers who died in the Great War.
